Biographical / Historical
The Law School has had access to library materials since its inception. During the 1920s and 1930s, this meant access to the Hartford County Bar Library; by 1929, the school began collecting its own volumes, often donated by faculty or trustees. By 1947, a librarian was listed in the school’s catalog, the first being Leon M. Liddell, Asstistant Professor of Law and Law Librarian. When the school moved to 39 Woodland Avenue, a physical library was part of the school. A library existed at 1800 Asylum as well and when the Law School moved to the former Hartford Seminary Campus, the library was housed in the Starr Building. In 1996, a new purpose-built library opened on the Elizabeth Street campus, numbering 240,000 volumes. In 2008 it was named for alum (class of 1956) and former Connecticut Governor, Thomas J. Meskill.
